Too many toys, is it rude to haul off gifts to goodwill?

If you are a parent you know that kids seem to attract all sorts of junk. Birthdays, Christmas, random gifts=house full of unwanted, unplayed with junk. Our home is pretty small and I try to keep the amount of toys my daughter (2yrs) has in her room at a minimum level. Not to be mean, but so that she is not overwhelmed with a mountain of stuffed animals.

I have expressed this view to my mother-in-law. I have asked her that if she bring Layla any gifts that they be books or puzzles/games (and not toys). However, she is always bringing her stuffed animals. If Layla was interested in the stuffed animal, that would be one thing–but she never plays with any stuffed animals and they just take up space. I am considering taking a big bag to the goodwill in our town. Would it be rude to include all of these gifts from my mother-in-law? I don’t want them laying around taking up space, but I don’t want to offend her either.

Absolutely not. My only hesitation is that I personally would not buy stuffed toys from Goodwill because they are not washable. The person who sees them there will not know that these are basically new toys that spent only a few days in a clean household, not being drooled over. For this reason, I might find a way to give them away to those I know, who will enjoy knowing that they are new, clean toys.

Nonetheless, Goodwill is absolutely a destination within the bounds of etiquette, so go forth and donate!
